Cornel West Says Obama’s Record Not Worthy of Martin Luther King | Your Black World

Cornel West

“Poverty, trade unions being pushed against the wall dealing with stagnating and declining wages when profits are still up and the 1 percent are doing very well,” he said. “No talk about drones dropping bombs on innocent people. So we end up with such a narrow, truncated political discourse.”

Dr. West says that he would not have wanted the Republicans to assume power in the White House, but that people should not be forced to settle for the lesser of two evils.  He also says that Dr. King would not approve of either President Obama’s policies or the state of the nation.   He says that nearly every speech Dr. King gave before he died shows that he is not ideologically aligned with President Obama, but that some are quick to make the affiliation primarily because he’s black.

National Day of Service | Obama

Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Yesterday the First Family kicked off inauguration weekend with a National Day of Service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by pitching in on improvements at Burrville Elementary school in Washington, DC. As part of their service, the President and First Lady stained a bookcase for students at the school just miles away from the White House.”

Africa Must Take Lead in Mali, France Says

Mali Invasion 2013

Once the situation is more stable, France wants African troops to do most of the work to wrest the north from the Islamists, as called for under a United Nations Security Council resolution passed in December.

French officials conceded, however, that there were disputes over how African participation would be financed and about the best way to transport troops to Mali. In Paris, French officials said the United States, while willing to help ferry African troops, wanted to bill France for the use of transport aircraft, which officials said would not go down well with the French. The Pentagon favors providing rapid help with transport and even with air-to-air refueling, but the White House is more reluctant, the officials said.

After fumbled oath, Roberts and Obama leave little to chance | Reuters

Inauguration Day 2013 |Swearing In

By Samuel P. Jacobs

WASHINGTON | Fri Jan 18, 2013 4:31pm EST

(Reuters) – Four years ago, John Roberts blew it. In his debut at swearing in the next president, the Supreme Court chief justice stumbled over the oath at Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony.

That led Obama to mix his words up too and the historic swearing-in of the first African-American president briefly became an awkward muddle.

To silence doubts that Obama’s presidency might not be legal because he failed to say the oath properly, the two men tried again the next day in the White House and went through the correct, constitutionally mandated avowal, word for word.
