Obama Plans For Troops In Afghanistan After 2014 To Be Announced Shortly: John Kerry

STOCKHOLM, May 14 (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama will announce in the next few weeks how many combat troops the United States will leave in Afghanistan in 2014, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday.

Obama has set next year as the target for withrawing most troops but the decision is a delicate one as sufficent forces must stay behind to train and support Afghan forces and carry out some operations.

“Very shortly, not too long from now, the president does intend to make public what his plans are for post-2014,” Kerry told reporters.

Mortgage applications rebounded last week as rates fell: MBA | Reuters

The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted index of mortgage application activity, which includes both refinancing and home purchase demand, rose 7.7 percent in the week ended March 22.

The index has declined for six of the past nine weeks as rates have pulled higher. Still, interest rates remain low on a historical basis, kept down by the Federal Reserve’s efforts to boost the economy by buying bonds and mortgage-backed securities.

New York cannibal cop in tears as defense rests after one day | Reuters

(Reuters) – The New York City cop on trial for plotting to kidnap, cook and eat women shed tears on Tuesday as his attorneys rested their case after one day.

“Just knowing that we’ve finally come to the conclusion (of the trial) and that his fate is in the jury’s hands” made Officer Gilberto Valle emotional, attorney Robert Baum said after court ended.

“That’s a huge weight for someone to bear,” Baum said.

Closing arguments were scheduled for early on Thursday.
