White People’s Fear of Discussing Race Holding Back Diversity Progress in Silicon Valley? – Blerds

Maxine Williams

Discussing race in profitable environments is a must, so says Maxine Williams of Facebook, one worldwide social media entity. Why is it critical to clear safe spaces for African Americans? Technology affords all the ability to work in groups or independently. For minorities, it is the option to work in healthy spaces devoid of most race-based micro-stressors that recent studies claim contribute to, if not cause, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other stress related illnesses. Another plus it the potential for above average revenue — if you are dedicated. Will technology become the leveling playing field for African Americans? It might well be.

Facebook’s global head of diversity, Maxine Williams, is taking a different approach to addressing the discussion of race in Silicon Valley, and, according to her, there’s no room for people to be sensitive about the subject.

Two SWAT Raids. Two Officers Dead. One Defendant Is Black, One White. Guess What Happened. | Mother Jones

Historically, police serving warrants were required to knock on a door, announce their presence, and wait for an answer. But in SWAT raids, this is often no longer the case. Police aren’t required to announce themselves if they believe the circumstances present a threat of physical violence, or if they believe evidence would be destroyed. According to a study by the American Civil Liberties Union, no-knock warrants are used in around 60 percent of drug searches.

Marvin Guy, Henry Magee

Like Guy, Magee was initially charged with capital murder, which is punishable by death. But before Magee’s trial, a grand jury found there was not enough evidence for him to stand trial on that charge. “In essence it was a ruling in self-defense,” DeGuerin said. Guy has been through the grand jury process as well, his attorney said, but in his case, the grand jury allowed prosecutors to move ahead with capital murder charges. So while Magee awaits trial for felony possession of marijuana, Guy awaits potential execution.

Dear White People and the Myth of the Post-Race College Campus | NewBlackMan in Exile

In this comprehensive review of Justin Simien’s first film “Dear White People,” published in “NewBlackMan (in Exile)”, Stephane Dunn teases out the academic and cultural notations guiding this redress on post-racialism. The film’s production and acceptance by the viewing public stands as a step forward in the overt race conversation. The title alone, in earlier years and still today, would have whites and fearful Blacks running the other way. Yet, “Dear White People” is making its rounds in theaters across the United States. Progress at least among some populations.

Excerpt:

Dear White People doesn’t merely copy or recycle still relevant cultural critiques about the racist imagery that infuses film and American culture though Simien certainly traverses some familiar ground – racialized representations in pop culture and warring notions of black authenticity, brought up to date with Aaron McGruder-like Boondock boldness. Dear White People adds its own chapter taking on ‘post-racial’ – ‘post-black’ contemporary discourses. However, that and title aside, its concern is with a range of competing social identities, particularly class and sexuality and the intersection of these with race. Race is as much a device as key theme.- Stephane Dunn

Similar to Ferguson, Missouri’s recent protest in the murder of Michael Brown, among other young Black men and women, some in the African American community sit astraddle the discussion of race. Our scholars and young are eager for the discussion to expand beyond academic discourse. The older and fearful or ‘conservative’ wait to mingle among the crowds that gather or recline – if a spark is not ignited. The mixed bag is historic and similar to any community. Still this historic step forward does not require the total capitulation of the African American community. The mere progress of this film speaks for itself.

Read this review. See the film. Then, bring this conversation of race and identity to your dinner table, clubs, and communities.

Racial attitudes are put under the microscope in satirical ‘Dear White People’ | 107.5 WBLS – Your #1 Source for R&B

The film follows four black students at a fictional Ivy League campus, where racial tensions have reached a boiling point over the party. But for star Tyler James Williams, his biggest problem was his hair.

The actor/rapper, 22, says he wishes he had the script earlier so he would have had time to grow out his character’s Afro. He instead had to sport an uncomfortable weave that he yanked out of his hair one morning.“Then a big patch was missing, so a wig got involved,” Williams tells The News. “It was a low point in my life.”

Wendell Pierce on white violence, entitlement and racial messaging – Real Time with Bill Maher – YouTube | #OYRchallenge

Wendell Pierce addresses white violence, entitlement and racial messaging in the middle of one Bill Maher‘s race discussions. Pierce is an actor and activist in New Orleans. His discussion cut across liberal and conservative perspectives. What was most notable is that Bill Maher, who promotes himself as an educated liberal resorted to the same lip talking points of most media anti-racist. Why do Black people beat their kids? It is a southern thing. Pierce redirects the conversation back to violence and its originating with white’s first introduction on American soil, slavery, and the modern day sanctioned murder of Black men. Good job, Wendell! Feed it to them until they understand or shut up. #OYRchallenge

Dear White Folks, Please Stop Being So ‘Surprised’ When White Cops Shoot Unarmed Black People | #OYRchallenge

The Daily Kos posted this article on September 29, 2014.  Since then the avalanche of written and video arguments against asking people to “check your privilege” has skyrocketed across social media. Comparative yeahs and nos are equal. But the understanding of what privilege really means is, sometimes by default, becoming patently clear. Surprisingly, some even feel victimized when asked to respect the boundaries of others. Amazing.

Nice work by chaunceydevegaDaily Kos

However well-intentioned and sincere the concern and surprise by the white American public and some in the chattering classes towards the events in Ferguson, the shooting of Jones by Groubert, or the panoply of unarmed black men by the police ever 28 hours in America may be, their response is still colored by white privilege.Black and brown Americans have been complaining about, organizing in response to, and publicly discussing police brutality and extra-judicial violence against their communities for several hundred years. Those concerns have largely been ignored by the white public.

Great work by our commentator. When the argument for not “checking your privilege” goes all wrong.

Princeton freshman Tal Fortgang is refusing to check is white privilege at the door. And why should he? The oppressive culture of equality, inclusiveness, and societal awareness has gone way too far in discriminating against the repressed, white male. Tal Fortgang is practically the Rosa Parks of rich white dudes. Somebody get this guy a Nobel Prize. Tweet: http://ctt.ec/Q8H67

OP-ED: No ‘Normal’ Response by Black People Possible to Continued White Supremacy | Juvenile Justice Information Exchange

Black people can, and have, done a lot of work to improve the quality of their lives, to educate and ensure the safety of their children, to create stable and thriving communities and to live fully as human beings. A huge portion of our nation’s wealth, both economic and cultural, has been created by black people, yet they are still trapped in a system that ignores their fundamental humanity and let me add that whether that system is led by Democrats or Republicans is irrelevant.Yet when events push the reality of black life in front of a larger audience, such as in Ferguson, Mo., whites begin to deploy well-developed defenses of criticism and blame shifting. This ability to change the conversation is one of the biggest advantages of white privilege, and one that we can’t ignore.
