Back in the day when the rent needed to be paid, people used to hold rent parties. At these parties, the tenant would charge a nominal fee in order to raise enough funds to ensure they kept a roof over their heads. Today, that would be called crowd funding. This is where a group of people put their money together to support a cause or fund a project on the Internet.
Kickstarter.com and Indiegogo.com are two of the main crowd funding sites on the Internet today. Others crowd funding sites bursting on the scene are Rockethub.com, Newjelly.com, and Quirky.com, and Cofolio.com, which target specialty projects.
Gallup’s ongoing “State of the American Workforce” survey reveals that America is largely a nation of working automatons, with most people not feeling emotional ties to what they do and sizeable numbers actively seeking to sabotage their colleagues and managers.
Black men are capable of greatness beyond our wildest imaginations. But it is because of this greatness that they remain oppressed by the powers that be, convinced to embrace their own self-destruction, given pathways to either the prison or the morgue at a very early age. We have failed many of our boys by not teaching them the things they need to know in order to grow into adequate husbands, fathers, citizens and leaders. The destruction of a community starts with destroying the family. To destroy the family, you can often start by getting rid of the male. Far too often, millions of black men are marginalized and terminated before they ever have a chance to learn how great they can be.
If I only had a dollar for each time I heard this growing up. The pity is that no one recognized their African ancestry. Mainly, because it was more than evident.
Growing up in a Black neighborhood, graduating from a majority Black high school, and living in a Black city, if only I had a dime for every time someone Black told me they were “part Cherokee” (or some other Indian tribe). But a Black ancestry and genetics expert says most Black claims of being part Indian just aren’t borne out in DNA testing. No, you are not a Navajo princess.
People sometimes find themselves in a situation where they don’t quite fit in, and they are cast aside by others that do. It hurts that person’s feelings to know they are being pushed away from others. A new study finds that it also hurts the people doing the pushing, as it is not in our nature to exclude others.
A few years ago, it occurred to me that it might be fun to try to trace the family trees of a group of African Americans all the way back to slavery, and then when the paper trail disappeared, analyze their DNA through biologist Rick Kittles‘ company, AfricanAncestry.com.
The poverty rate for all African Americans in 2011 was 28.1% which is an increase from 25.5% in 2005. Actually the poverty rate increased between 2005 and 2011 for every demographic of African Americans except those ages 65 and over who experienced a decrease from 21.2% to 18.8%. Black families with children under 18 headed by a single mother have the highest rate of poverty at 46.5% compared to only 8.6% percent of married-couple Black families.
Jarrett told six African American reporters last Thursday, “If you look at the president’s record in the first four years, if you look at his major domestic policy accomplishments, they disproportionately do benefit the African-American community.” She further elucidated, “If you look at the Affordable Care Act – roughly 9 million African Americans uninsured will have health insurance today – if you look at the president’s Recovery Act and subsequent budgets … If you went through the menu of tax incentives and unemployment that disproportionately benefit the African-American community, time and time again – I think unemployment insurance has been extended like nine times –every single time we had to fight the Republicans to get that done.”
Almost everyone one of us deceives our minds in one way or another. It is part of human nature. This practice removes negative spots from our lives. When you talk yourself up and deceive your brain from little problems, you could end up having better relationships with people and appear to have more confidence.
