While the Global Village is Expanding, Some Are Burning Their Huts. ..

To find the origins of the referendum—the practice of putting questions (rather than candidates) to popular vote, which made news this week when Britain voted to leave the European Union—you have to go way back. “There was a Roman historian called Tacitus who wrote that on the small matters the governors decide, on important matters…

Riots Reframed is a feature-length documentary which reframes England’s 2011 riots through voices of resistance — threading these perspectives together using moody instrumentals, dramatic monologue and raw spoken word. This hard-hitting film is unique both in its scope and the journey that produced it.

The idea was conceived soon after the producer, Fahim Alam, was released from prison on bail, after being arrested for taking part in riots. With virtually no knowledge of filming and editing, he set out to make an independent and complex documentary. Most of it was filmed whilst Fahim wore an ankle tag and was subject to a strict curfew as he awaited trial for the charge of ‘violent disorder’.

The documentary takes the viewer through a journey that begins in Tottenham and spirals out to a detailed look at the role of police, power, racism, government, prison, war, resistance and more.

Although the voices base their analysis around the riots, the scope of Riots Reframed is much wider and stands in its own right as a poetic but fierce challenge to the system we live under and the suffering it produces. The result is a radical social commentary grounded in knowledge and art, that synthesises a number of voices, from prominent social, cultural and political analysts, to prisoners still recovering from time inside.

VoiceOver | Riots Reframed is simultaneously engaging, informative, thought-provoking, emotion-stirring, and importantly, a challenge to the media institutions that serve the narrative of the power structure. This film is a historical document not to be missed.

Introducing the Kid Who Attended Oxford University at 6-Years-Old

Joshua Beckford, 6-year-old Oxford University student

While we in America are still on the Pull-Up-Your-Pants campaign, here is what is happening overseas.

At 6, Beckford was the youngest person to ever attend Oxford University and as if that wasn’t enough, the now 8-year-old has already mapped out his future and plans to be a neurosurgeon as well as an astronaut at some point in his life. Beckford, who was too advanced for a standard curriculum and forced to be home-schooled, has also taken an interest in Egypt and is working on a children’s book about the historic nation.

Blue-Eyed Jihad – By Harald Doornbos and Jenan Moussa | Foreign Policy

The phenomenon of European jihadists flowing into Syria is increasingly attracting the attention of Western security agencies, which fear what they will do when they return home. According to American and European intelligence officials speaking to the New York Times, more Westerners are currently fighting in Syria than in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, or Yemen: The estimates range from 600 to 1,000 fighters. Their primary motivation is religion — the vast majority are white converts to Islam or naturalized immigrants with a Muslim background.

George Osborne hasn’t just failed – this is an economic disaster | Seumas Milne | Comment is free | The Guardian

It would be comic if the consequences weren’t so grim. There is no economic failure, it turns out, which cannot be hailed by George Osborne as a vindication of the policies that brought it about. Faced with the decision by the credit agency Moody’s to scrap Britain’s AAA rating, the chancellor declared it was yet another reason to stick to austerity – and the “clearest possible warning” to anyone who might think of breaking with it.

PressTV – Bankrupt Paris on colonial adventure across Africa: Abayomi Azikiwe

An analyst says with job minister Michel Sapin’s announcement that France is bankrupt it is plain to see why it is intervening militarily in resource-rich Mali.In the background of this international criticism is growing over human rights abuses by Malian troops – the UN has accused the country’s army of carrying out multiple summary executions. French President Francois Hollande has visited the West African country of Mali. The country is coping with a French military intervention working with the Malian army with the stated purpose to weed out terrorist cells that have taken over significant areas and have engaged in foreign hostage taking in neighboring Algeria. These terror groups are reportedly from Libya used by the French and it’s Western allies to topple the Libyan government and secure oil fields etc of that country. Observers also speculate that humanitarian reasons is not the only reason why France has intervened militarily in Mali as the country possesses energy and precious metal resources and war may help or distract from serious economic woes at home in France.

 Kirit Radia

MOSCOW – A very lucky baby girl narrowly avoided death after the car she was riding in skidded out of control on an icy Russian highway and slammed into an oncoming truck.

The 1-year-old girl, who was not strapped into a carseat, was ejected from the car and landed face down on the pavement. A passing truck was able to slow down to avoid running over her. The entire ordeal was captured on the dashboard camera of a vehicle driving right behind the crash.
